Malang Sarr Leaves RC Lens: A Key Defensive Pillar Exits
The dismantling of RC Lens’ Coupe de France-winning side shows no sign of slowing. The latest piece to fall is Malang Sarr.
After Adrien Thomasson walked away on a free to join Stade Rennais, Allan Saint-Maximin exited at the end of his short-term deal, and coach Pierre Sage swapped the Stade Bollaert for Crystal Palace, Sarr has now followed them out of the door. Lens confirmed on Tuesday that the defender will leave when his contract expires on 30 June.
It closes a chapter that began in the 2024/25 season, when Sarr arrived in the north of France looking to rebuild. His contract at Chelsea had been mutually terminated, his career drifting after early promise at OGC Nice and with France’s youth teams. Lens offered a reset. He grabbed it.
At Bollaert, Sarr did more than simply relaunch himself. He became a cornerstone. Last season alone, he played 39 times in all competitions, anchoring a back line that underpinned a remarkable campaign: Coupe de France glory and a second-place finish in Ligue 1. For a player searching for rhythm and relevance, it was a full revival.
Across his time in Artois, Sarr amassed 62 appearances in Lens colours. Those numbers tell part of the story. The rest is in the way he helped stabilise a side on the rise, bringing top-flight experience and a left-footed balance that allowed Sage to build from the back with conviction.
Now, like so many of his former teammates and his former coach, he steps into uncertainty again. At 27, with a full, consistent season behind him and his injury record intact, Sarr hits the market as a free agent with something valuable: proof that he can be a reliable starter in a high-pressure environment.
Lens, meanwhile, must confront a very different challenge. The club that surged to trophies and a runners-up finish is being stripped of its leaders, its manager, and now a key defensive pillar. The exodus continues. Sarr’s next destination is unknown, but after his resurgence at Bollaert, the question is no longer whether he belongs at the top level – it’s which club is prepared to build a defence around him.
