Liverpool's Defensive Search Faces Setback with Van Hecke
Liverpool’s search for the next pillar of their back line is set to hit an early setback. Jan Paul van Hecke, the Brighton and Hove Albion defender on their radar, has his heart set on Tottenham Hotspur and a reunion with Roberto De Zerbi.
Anfield’s need is obvious. With Ibrahima Konate heading for the exit and Virgil van Dijk edging deeper into the veteran phase of his career, Liverpool are trying to reshape the core of their defence. Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet will step into Andoni Iraola’s squad next season, but both are projects, not yet the finished article for a title push.
So Liverpool went shopping at a familiar market: the Premier League. According to Dutch outlet VI, they made contact with Van Hecke, who is under contract at Brighton until 2027 and has grown into one of their standout performers. Chelsea and Newcastle United also monitored the 26-year-old Netherlands international, sensing an opportunity to prise him away from the south coast.
Interest was never the problem. Convincing the player was.
Over recent months, several top-flight clubs circled. VI describe Van Hecke as Brighton’s “absolute star player” last season, a defender whose blend of aggression and composure made him one of the more intriguing options on the market. Liverpool called. Chelsea watched. Newcastle tracked. The list of admirers grew.
Then Tottenham moved with intent.
Spurs have already lodged two bids and are preparing a third, having pushed ahead of the competition in recent weeks. Crucially, they have an agreement on personal terms with Van Hecke. That step alone changes the entire landscape of the chase.
The pull is clear. Van Hecke flourished under De Zerbi at Brighton, and the Italian’s presence at Tottenham has proved decisive. Reports in the Netherlands say the centre-back “became enthusiastic” during talks with his former coach, seeing a clear role and a familiar style that suits his game.
At that point, the race effectively ended.
“Van Hecke himself has therefore made up his mind: it has to be Tottenham,” VI report. Despite fresh noise from England about rival interest, the defender is now said to be focused solely on sealing a move to Spurs. The club, for their part, are working to accelerate negotiations and drag the deal into its final phase.
Timing matters. Van Hecke is with the Netherlands camp and wants his future resolved before the World Cup, allowing him to focus on the tournament with the security of a major transfer already in place. Tottenham are trying to match that urgency.
Inside the Dutch camp, the move is already a talking point. Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven has been openly encouraging his compatriot to join him in north London.
“I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” Van de Ven said, pushing the idea of a Dutch partnership at the heart of Ange Postecoglou’s defence.
National team manager Ronald Koeman views the situation from a different angle, but with the same bottom line. Asked about Van Hecke’s proposed move to Tottenham, he underlined what every international coach wants in a major tournament year.
“Ideally, I would prefer a player to have peace of mind regarding his club. And that there is clarity about the future. But I cannot stop it,” Koeman admitted.
So Liverpool wait. They have made contact, explored the possibility, and identified Van Hecke as a potential answer to a looming defensive rebuild. But the defender has chosen his path, and it leads to north London, not Anfield.
Tottenham now stand on the brink of adding a defender who knows De Zerbi’s demands, understands the Premier League, and walks into a dressing room already calling his name. If they get this over the line quickly, Van Hecke will head into the World Cup not as a player in limbo, but as the latest piece in Spurs’ evolving spine.
