Roma Target Greenwood as Marseille Negotiations Heat Up

Roma have made their move. After weeks of positioning and background noise, the Italian club have reached an agreement on personal terms with Marseille forward Greenwood, taking a major step toward what would be one of the most eye-catching deals of their summer.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 24-year-old has given the green light to a switch to the Stadio Olimpico. The proposed contract is built to grow with him: a progressive salary package starting at a net €4 million per season, with performance-related bonuses layered on top. Roma’s ownership group see him as a central piece in a rebuilt attack, not a luxury add-on.

The deal, though, is still stuck in the only place that really matters at this stage: between the two clubs.

Marseille value Greenwood at around €55 million. Roma’s opening proposal is closer to €40m.

That gap is not small, and both sides know it. Negotiations are ongoing as they search for a number that works for everyone, with Roma trying to test the limits of a club under pressure.

Marseille’s situation is shaping the entire story. The French side are wrestling with financial concerns and reports of a possible threat to their participation in next season’s Europa League. That backdrop has sharpened the need to generate funds and made a sale more likely, even after Greenwood’s productive spell in Ligue 1.

Signs on the player’s side point in the same direction. Reports in France suggest Greenwood has already handed back the keys to his house in Aix, a symbolic step that hints he is braced for a move away from the country.

For a long stretch of the summer, his future seemed to lie elsewhere. Fenerbahce had surged to the front of the queue, their interest fuelled publicly by presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who tied part of his campaign to landing the forward and claimed to have an agreement in place through to 2030.

Then the politics changed. Safi lost the election to Aziz Yildirim, and with that defeat the proposal linked to him stalled and effectively disappeared from the table. The Istanbul route faded almost overnight, leaving a clear lane for Roma to accelerate.

Now the Italian club are regarded as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature as they push to add firepower before the new season. The player’s reported preference is clear. The numbers are not.

Next Phase

The next phase is all about the fee. Roma are expected to keep chipping away at Marseille’s valuation in the coming days, aiming to drag the price closer to their own figures before pre-season begins in earnest. Every million will be argued over, every clause scrutinised.

One more club is watching with interest from a distance. Manchester United, Greenwood’s former side, are understood to hold a sell-on clause from his previous transfer. Any agreement between Roma and Marseille would not only reshape Roma’s attack and ease Marseille’s finances, it would also ripple back to Old Trafford.

The talks now move into the decisive stretch. Roma have the player on side. Marseille have the price. Somewhere between €40m and €55m lies the answer to whether this move actually happens.
