Lauren James Shines in 2025/26 Season with Chelsea

Lauren James has spent this season turning setbacks into statements.

Barely a few months removed from the early-season injury she picked up while helping England retain the European Championship, the Chelsea forward roared back into the 2025/26 campaign with a string of performances that carried both weight and artistry. She did not just return to the pitch; she took control of it.

The numbers behind that resurgence have already been recognised. At 24, James has been voted Chelsea Women’s Player of the Season by the supporters, joining an elite internal club. Only Fran Kirby, Sam Kerr and Erin Cuthbert had previously claimed the award twice. Now James stands alongside them, her name etched into the modern history of the club.

And she has done it in the most Lauren James way possible: with goals that stay in the mind long after the final whistle.

One in particular has risen above the rest.

It came in the first leg of Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal, a night loaded with tension and narrative. The Blues were behind, the tie threatening to tilt away from them, when a half-cleared corner dropped invitingly to James on the edge of the area.

What followed was pure instinct and pure technique.

She shifted the ball onto her left foot – the one defenders are supposed to want her on, the so‑called weaker side – and, without a hint of hesitation, unleashed a vicious, curling strike from 25 yards. The ball arced away from the goalkeeper and tore into the top corner. No deflection, no scramble, no doubt. Just a clean, ruthless finish that flipped the mood of the night and stamped her authority on the tie.

It was the kind of goal that silences a stadium for a heartbeat, then detonates it.

Supporters did not forget. When the Goal of the Season vote opened, that moment against Arsenal surged to the front. James took a third of all votes cast, a commanding share in a field stacked with quality and sentiment.

Kerr’s final goal for the club – a crisp volley against Manchester United, heavy with emotion and legacy – pushed hard and finished runner-up. Ellie Carpenter’s driving solo run and finish against Barcelona, a goal that showcased power and poise from deep, completed a top three that would grace any highlight reel.

James still came out on top.

Player of the Season. Goal of the Season. Another year, another set of individual honours for a player whose influence on this Chelsea side grows with each campaign.

The mantelpiece is getting crowded. The question now is how far she can push both herself and this team from here.
