Ibrahima Konate Leaves Liverpool for Real Madrid on Free Transfer
Ibrahima Konate is set to swap Anfield for the Bernabeu on a free transfer – and the numbers behind his Real Madrid move underline just how far his stock has risen.
The French defender, whose Liverpool contract expires on June 30, failed to reach an agreement on fresh terms despite prolonged negotiations. Last weekend, Liverpool confirmed his departure on a free and, in the same breath, announced the dismissal of Arne Slot, signalling the start of a new era on Merseyside.
Konate has already addressed his exit, admitting he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game”. The goodbye he never had at Anfield will now be replaced by a grand unveiling in Madrid – and on a contract that places him among the game’s elite earners.
Galactico wages for a free transfer
Fabrizio Romano revealed that Konate has verbally agreed to join Real Madrid on a four-year deal, contingent on Florentino Perez retaining the presidency ahead of rival candidate Enrique Riquelme. Spanish outlet El Desmarque has since lifted the lid on the financial package waiting for the former RB Leipzig centre-back.
Konate’s deal is expected to run until 2030 and will reportedly pay him €24 million gross per season. Broken down, that’s around €460,000 a week – roughly £400,000 a week – before tax. Across four years, the contract is said to be worth in the region of £83 million if he sees it out.
And that is only part of the windfall. Because he is arriving as a free agent, Konate is also in line for a signing-on bonus of about £17 million, a figure that underlines how aggressively Real have moved to secure him without paying a transfer fee.
The 25-year-old has, according to reports, turned down a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to make the switch to Madrid. He will still earn a salary that Liverpool were never going to match. At Anfield, he was believed to be on around £150,000 a week; Real have effectively tripled that to bring him into a defence already stacked with talent.
Liverpool turn to the market after major exits
For Liverpool, Konate’s departure is just one piece of a growing puzzle. Fresh from appointing Andoni Iraola as Slot’s replacement, the club now faces a summer of reconstruction after losing Konate, Andy Robertson and Mo Salah in quick succession.
The need for reinforcements is obvious. The name linked to Anfield, though, has raised eyebrows.
TEAMtalk report that Liverpool are targeting Burnley defender Maxime Esteve as a potential replacement at centre-back. The Frenchman only arrived at Turf Moor last summer, joining from Montpellier for £10.3 million, and endured relegation in his debut Premier League campaign.
Relegation, however, did not hide his impact. Esteve impressed enough to attract interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, and Burnley are understood to be resigned to losing him in the upcoming window. They are already looking at Middlesbrough captain Dael Fry as the man to anchor their defence if Esteve moves on.
So Liverpool lose one French centre-back and may turn to another, younger version, battle-tested in a struggling side and now on the radar of England’s biggest clubs. Konate heads to Madrid to chase Champions League titles on a Galactico wage. Esteve, if Liverpool push ahead, could be walking into the kind of vacancy that defines careers.
