Georgia Stanway Joins Arsenal on Free Transfer

Georgia Stanway is set to join Arsenal on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the start of July, with only a medical standing between the England midfielder and a return to the Women’s Super League.

The 27-year-old will arrive in north London when her contract with the Frauen Bundesliga champions expires, ending a four-year spell in Germany that has yielded four league titles and confirmed her status among the elite in her position.

Arsenal land a midfield leader

Arsenal have tracked Stanway for several years, viewing her as a cornerstone for a rebuilt midfield and a player capable of driving a renewed tilt at the WSL title, which they have not won since 2019. The club moved decisively, identifying her as a priority target even before last season’s Champions League final triumph.

For England, Stanway has been central to an era-defining run. She has amassed 91 caps, scoring 32 goals, and has been integral to back-to-back European titles and the run to the 2023 World Cup final. Her blend of aggression, energy and end-product has made her one of the most complete central midfielders in the game.

Her departure from Bayern has been handled with rare openness. The club confirmed in January that she would leave at the end of her deal, with Bianca Rech, Bayern’s director of women’s football, publicly lauding Stanway’s “commitment and character” and admitting she had “stolen our hearts”. Bayern accepted her desire to seek a new challenge after conquering Germany.

Stanway, who previously formed the heartbeat of Manchester City’s midfield, adapted quickly to life in Munich and became a fan favourite. Now she returns to England a more polished, battle-hardened version of the player who left.

Reuteler deal close as rebuild gathers pace

Arsenal’s summer overhaul does not stop with Stanway. The club are close to finalising the signing of Géraldine Reuteler on a free transfer after the Switzerland international’s departure from Eintracht Frankfurt was confirmed.

Reuteler offers a different kind of threat. An attacking midfielder who can also operate across the forward line, she has produced 54 goals and 45 assists in 184 games for Frankfurt, including 10 goals this season. Her performances for the host nation at last summer’s European Championship underlined her ability to shape big occasions and stretch defences in the final third.

The double move signals a clear shift in Arsenal’s midfield profile: more dynamism, more goals, more edge.

Big names out, new core incoming

To make room for that reset, Arsenal have already confirmed a series of high-profile departures this summer. Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina and goalkeepers Manuela Zinsberger and Naomi Williams will all leave the club.

It is a bold break with a familiar core and a statement that the squad is being reshaped, not merely tweaked. Stanway arrives as a ready-made leader in the middle of the pitch; Reuteler, if and when her deal is completed, brings incision and versatility around her.

Arsenal wanted a midfield that could go toe to toe with Europe’s best and drag the WSL trophy back to north London. With Stanway at the heart of it, they have just taken a significant step towards that ambition.
