Breel Embolo Cleared to Join Switzerland’s World Cup Squad
Breel Embolo will finally link up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after a late visa green light ended an anxious wait for one of Murat Yakin’s key forwards.
The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old has been cleared to travel and is expected to arrive in San Diego on Friday evening, several days after the rest of the squad flew out to their pre-tournament base in California.
From boarding gate to back room checks
Embolo had been due to travel with his team-mates on Tuesday, only for his ESTA travel authorisation to be pulled for further review shortly before departure. While the rest of the squad settled into camp on the West Coast, he stayed behind in Switzerland, stuck in administrative limbo and watching preparations unfold from afar.
The delay pushed the case into the hands of American authorities, who demanded additional checks before granting entry. On Wednesday, Embolo attended an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern, where officials examined documents linked to a legal case dating back to a 2018 altercation in Basel.
That was not the only file on the table. According to the Swiss federation, U.S. officials also requested court records relating to a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, a case that ended with a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year.
Clearance at last, and a full squad again
Although those matters had already run their course in the Swiss legal system, they triggered extra scrutiny under U.S. entry rules. Only after that process was complete did the visa finally arrive.
“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo's visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” the federation said in a statement.
For Switzerland, the decision closes several days of uncertainty and restores an important piece of their attacking puzzle. With the paperwork now stamped and the questions answered, Embolo can stop checking his inbox and start thinking about defenders again.
