Brazil Dominates Scotland 3-0 to Secure Group C Top Spot
Gabriel Magalhaes anchored a second successive shutout as Brazil swept aside Scotland 3-0 to seal top spot in Group C at the World Cup.
The centre-back, ever-present again for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, barely put a foot wrong across the 90 minutes. Brazil have now scored six without reply in their last two games. The foundations are his.
Vinicius punishes Scotland errors
Scotland arrived needing a result and started with intent, but one mistake ripped up their plan.
Defender Scott McKenna hesitated, lost the ball to Bournemouth forward Rayan, and Brazil pounced. Rayan kept his head, slid the ball across the box, and Vinicius Junior did the rest with a simple tap-in. One loose touch, one ruthless finish.
From there, Brazil played with the swagger of five-time world champions. The ball moved quicker, the gaps widened, and Scotland’s back line creaked.
Just as Steve Clarke’s side looked set to reach the interval only one down, Brazil struck again. In first-half stoppage time, Bruno Guimaraes drifted into space on the right and measured a teasing cross to the back post. Vinicius timed his run, rose above his marker and guided a header in. A soft goal to concede, a brutal one to live with.
Scotland turn to Tierney, Brazil turn the screw
Chasing the game, Scotland turned to a familiar face. Former Gunner Kieran Tierney came off the bench as they searched for any route back into the contest.
It never arrived.
Brazil tightened their grip instead. On the hour mark, the pressure finally told. A flowing move ended with Matheus Cunha in the right place to tap home Brazil’s third, killing off any lingering doubt and confirming that all three points were heading their way.
Six minutes later, another Arsenal connection stepped into the spotlight. Gabriel Martinelli entered for the final half-hour, adding fresh legs and direct running as Brazil saw out the win with minimum fuss and maximum control.
Group picture: Brazil on top, Japan in sight
The 3-0 victory, following last week’s identical scoreline against Haiti, pushed Brazil to the summit of Group C on goal difference. That matters now.
Top spot sets up a meeting with the runner-up from Group F, currently Japan. The path becomes clearer tonight. Japan, featuring former Gunner Takehiro Tomiyasu, face Viktor Gyokeres’ Sweden at the Dallas Stadium. The winner of that clash is likely to earn a date with the Selecao on Monday, June 29, at 6pm UK time.
By then, Brazil’s Gabis will know exactly what lies ahead.
Gunners everywhere: Germany v Ecuador next
The Arsenal thread runs through the rest of the evening, too.
Two more Gunners are set to collide as Kai Havertz’s Germany take on Piero Hincapie’s Ecuador at the New York New Jersey Stadium. The stakes could hardly be more different.
Ecuador sit on one point from two games and must win to have any chance of reaching the round of 32. Germany, by contrast, have already locked up top spot in Group E. Kick-off is at 9pm UK time.
Brazil are through, Germany are cruising, Ecuador are fighting for survival. And in the middle of it all, Arsenal’s contingent continues to shape this World Cup.
