Orlando Pirates Mourn the Loss of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth Chakane
Orlando Pirates are mourning the loss of one of the club’s most cherished matriarchs, with the passing of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane on 23 June 2026.
Mrs Chakane, the beloved wife of long-serving club figure Mr Franklin Chakane, was a familiar and respected presence around the Buccaneers’ family. Her death has cast a sombre mood over the Soweto giants, who have called on the wider football community to stand with the Chakanes in their grief.
In a message of condolence, the club expressed its deepest sympathies to Mr Chakane, the Chakane family, relatives, friends, and everyone whose life was touched by “Nani”. Pirates have asked supporters and the broader football fraternity to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this period of mourning.
Funeral Details
The funeral service will take place on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa in Orlando East, Soweto. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 09:00. After the service, the funeral procession is expected to leave at around 11:00 for the burial at Nasrec Cemetery.
Mourners are also being received at the family home at 1173 Jacobs Street, Protea North, Soweto, where the outpouring of support reflects the impact Mrs Chakane had on those around her.
In a club built on community and shared history, her passing is felt far beyond one household. It touches an institution and a fan base that pride themselves on standing together in moments like this.
