Barcelona Weigh Dumfries Move as Kounde's Future Hangs in Balance
The season is barely in the rear-view mirror, but Barcelona’s rebuild is already in motion. A new centre-forward tops the shopping list, yet behind that headline pursuit, another storyline is quietly gathering pace on the right flank.
The right-back position, never fully settled in recent years, is back under the microscope. So is Jules Kounde.
Dumfries back on Barça’s radar
Denzel Dumfries, long admired at the club, has re-emerged as a live option. According to reports from Italy, the Inter Milan defender is expected to be on the move this summer, and his camp has already started placing him in front of Europe’s elite.
Liverpool have been sounded out. Barcelona too.
The Dutch international, a powerful, straight-line runner with a taste for the final third, is open to offers. His new representative, Ali Barat, met Deco only a few days ago, laying out the player’s situation and testing the temperature at Barça’s sporting department.
The answer for now: interest, but no rush.
Barcelona will not move until they know what leaves the building. Any serious push for Dumfries is tied directly to one name – Kounde.
Kounde at the crossroads
Inside the club, there is a clear understanding that Kounde’s future could shape a large part of the summer. The Frenchman has never fully escaped the debate over his role and performances at right-back, and Barça are prepared to listen to offers.
If a significant proposal lands, it could trigger a chain reaction. Space on the wage bill. A slot in the back line. A justification to pivot towards Dumfries.
For now, it is a waiting game. The feeling at Barça is that Kounde’s situation could generate substantial movement in the coming weeks, with several scenarios still in play.
A €25 million window
Dumfries comes with a clear price tag and a ticking clock. His contract includes a €25 million release clause that activates in July and stays valid for only one month. Any club wanting to use that mechanism must move decisively in that narrow window.
Barcelona know this timeline well. They were already pushed towards Dumfries last summer by his then-agent Jorge Mendes, but tight salary limits made the move impossible.
The financial picture has not magically transformed. Dumfries’ wages are considered manageable within Barça’s current structure, yet his arrival hinges on something bolder: an aggressive plan of outgoing transfers that frees up room to maneuver.
Cancelo first, then the dominoes
Before any of that, there is another priority on the right: João Cancelo. Barcelona are focused on reaching an agreement with Al Hilal to keep the Portuguese full-back, whose versatility on both flanks has made him central to their defensive planning.
Only once Cancelo’s situation is resolved will the club fully reassess the back line. Outgoings will dictate incomings. If the right offer arrives for Kounde and the numbers line up, Dumfries moves from idea to opportunity.
Deco and Hansi Flick both rate the Inter defender. They see a profile the squad lacks: a physically dominant, dynamic wide player who can drive up and down the touchline and add a more muscular edge to a team that has often looked too light in the duels.
The pieces are on the board. A €25 million clause opens in July, Kounde’s future remains in flux, and Cancelo’s deal sits at the front of the queue.
Barcelona know what Dumfries can bring. The question now is whether this summer’s clear-out will be bold enough to open the door.
