Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m to Strengthen Midfield

Aston Villa have fired another shot in the transfer market, sealing the £38m signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves as Unai Emery rebuilds his midfield on the fly.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m tied to add-ons, after leaving Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal on Thursday to complete a medical and finalise the move to Villa Park. Atletico Madrid had tracked him, but Villa moved with greater conviction and got their man.

It is the second major midfield deal in the space of days. On Friday, Villa broke their transfer record with a package worth more than £50m for Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to the Switzerland international and underlining their intent to stay among the Premier League’s elite.

This is not a summer of gentle refinement at Villa. It is a scramble with a clear purpose.

Amadou Onana’s serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup has ruled him out until next year, ripping a hole in the heart of Emery’s side. Morgan Rogers is also heading for the exit, with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea for the versatile midfielder. Gomes brings Premier League experience and a snarl Villa badly need. He made 41 appearances for Wolves last season in a campaign that ended in relegation, as Gary O’Neil’s side finished bottom of the table. Across his time at Molineux, he played 130 games and scored seven goals after joining from Flamengo in 2023.

Those numbers only tell part of the story. At Wolves he became the heartbeat of a struggling side, one of the few constants in a turbulent season. At Villa, the expectations change. The stage is bigger, the stakes higher, the margin for error smaller.

Villa now have Manzambi’s elegance and Gomes’ edge to reshape a midfield that has been torn apart and rebuilt in a matter of weeks. The money is eye-watering, the ambition obvious.
