Arsenal Target Leicester Prodigy Monga Before Birthday Deadline

Arsenal are closing in on one of the most coveted teenagers in English football, with Leicester City winger Monga emerging as the latest piece in Mikel Arteta’s long-term rebuild.

The 16-year-old is at the centre of a concerted push from the north London club to stockpile the very best domestic talent, and, according to reports, Arsenal now lead the chase for his signature.

A prodigy forged in crisis

Leicester’s slide has opened the door. Relegation to League One, sealed by a 23rd-place finish in the Championship and a meagre return of 46 points, has accelerated Monga’s departure from the King Power Stadium. A club still reeling from a brutal fall now faces the prospect of losing one of its brightest academy products before he has even signed his first full professional deal.

Monga has already brushed shoulders with history. He made his Premier League debut for Leicester at just 15 years and 271 days old against Newcastle United, becoming the third-youngest player ever to appear in the competition. Only Arsenal’s own Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri stepped onto the Premier League stage earlier.

That cameo in April 2025 left a lasting impression on his then-manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman did not hold back in his assessment of the youngster’s ceiling, praising his speed, quality out wide and attitude, and describing him as a “fantastic talent” who had earned his chance and merited more minutes.

Arteta’s next project

It is exactly the sort of profile that appeals to Arteta. The Arsenal manager has tracked Monga for some time and sees the England Under-19 international as a modern, flexible attacker: both-footed, comfortable on either flank and capable of drifting inside to dictate play as a No 10.

This is not a case of a wonderkid being protected from the rough edges of senior football. During Leicester’s fraught Championship campaign last season, Monga played 27 times, starting eight matches. Those minutes, in a side fighting and failing to stay afloat, have hardened his reputation as more than just a YouTube highlight reel.

Valuations have already started to swirl. Reports suggest Leicester are looking at a fee in the region of £10 million to £15m, a sizeable sum for a teenager but one increasingly familiar to clubs determined to get ahead of the curve in the homegrown market.

A race against the calendar

There is a clock ticking in the background. Monga is due to sign his first professional contract with Leicester when he turns 17 on July 10, a deal that would formally lock in the Foxes’ rights and shift any dispute into the realm of compensation and tribunals.

Arsenal want to avoid that. The club hope to thrash out a transfer fee with Leicester before that birthday deadline, sidestepping the uncertainty of an independent tribunal and securing clarity over one of the most intriguing young forwards in the country.

The move would also feed into a wider reshaping of Arsenal’s attacking options. As Monga edges closer to the Emirates, the future of Ethan Nwaneri grows less clear. Once the poster boy for Arsenal’s youth revolution after his record-breaking debut, the teenager now finds himself at a crossroads following a loan spell with Marseille that has left question marks rather than guarantees.

Arsenal have made a habit of betting early and boldly on youth. If they win the race for Monga, they will be doubling down on that strategy again—this time with a winger shaped by relegation, early exposure to the Premier League and a price tag that says he is no longer just a prospect, but a player expected to matter.
