Alvaro Arbeloa Targets Cesar Palacios for Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. Fresh from taking the reins at Craven Cottage, the Spaniard has turned his gaze back to a familiar hunting ground: Real Madrid’s academy.

This time, the name at the top of his list is Cesar Palacios.

Arbeloa’s Fulham plan runs through Valdebebas

According to reports in Spain, Arbeloa has asked Fulham’s hierarchy to explore a deal for the Castilla attacking midfielder as he starts to shape his squad for the new Premier League season. He knows exactly what he would be getting.

Palacios is not some distant scouting tip. He is a player Arbeloa has already trusted in high-pressure surroundings, a youngster he helped guide through the ranks at Real Madrid and into the first team.

It was Arbeloa who handed the 21-year-old his senior debut for Los Blancos back in January. Palacios went on to make seven appearances, a small but significant step for a player trying to force his way into one of the most competitive midfields in world football.

That pathway now looks blocked.

A summer of almosts for Palacios

The expectation inside Madrid has long been that Palacios will spend the coming season away from the Santiago Bernabeu. He has started pre-season with the first team, but everyone involved understands the reality: regular minutes at that level are unlikely.

Earlier this summer, it looked as though his next chapter was already written. Palacios reached a verbal agreement with Como, and both the player and his camp believed the move was close. Bags not quite packed, but plans made. Then the deal collapsed before contracts were signed.

Since that breakdown, the market has circled. FC Porto and Osasuna have both shown interest, testing the water without diving in. None of those approaches has advanced far enough to turn into a concrete agreement.

So Palacios has gone back to Valdebebas, back into the training rhythm, and back into conversations with Real Madrid about what comes next. His contract runs until 2027, which gives the club control but also ramps up the need to find the right environment for his development.

Regular football is no longer a luxury for him. It is a necessity.

A reunion in west London?

This is where Fulham – and Arbeloa – step in.

The Spanish coach is pushing for the club to move. He sees Palacios as more than a speculative project; he sees a player he already trusts, one who understands his demands and his ideas from their time together with Castilla and the first team.

For Fulham, the attraction is obvious. A 21-year-old attacking midfielder schooled in Madrid’s system, eager for minutes, and available at a stage of his career where his ceiling is still rising. For Palacios, the Premier League offers a stage and a manager who has already backed him when it mattered.

An exit from Madrid feels increasingly likely. Not because the club doubts his talent, but because the traffic ahead of him is brutal and the clock on his development is ticking.

If Fulham can turn Arbeloa’s request into a deal, they offer him something Como, Porto and Osasuna could not: a coach with whom he already shares a footballing language.

Gonzalo, Mastantuono and a clear recruitment blueprint

Palacios is not an isolated case. Arbeloa’s early transfer wishlist has a clear pattern.

He has also asked Fulham to keep close tabs on Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono, two more talents tied to Real Madrid’s future. Familiar faces, familiar profiles, and a clear strategy: surround himself with players who already know his methods, his tempo, his standards.

There is, however, one significant variable: Jose Mourinho.

Arbeloa’s successor at Real Madrid intends to take a long, hard look at these youngsters during pre-season before making any decisions on their futures. Mourinho wants to see them up close, under his own eye, before sanctioning loans or sales.

So the next few weeks will be decisive. If Mourinho opens the door, Arbeloa and Fulham will be waiting on the other side, ready to offer Palacios and his peers a new stage, a new league, and a manager who already believes they are ready for it.
