West Ham Targets Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas Amid Premier League Competition

West Ham United are pushing hard to reshape their attack for life in the Championship – and they are aiming high.

According to Spanish outlet Orgullo Biri, Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas has landed firmly on their shortlist, with the Hammers having already initiated contact over a possible deal. The problem? They are not alone. Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Turkish side Trabzonspor are all tracking the 27-year-old.

Ambitious move from a relegated giant

Relegation has not dulled West Ham’s ambition. Under Nuno Espirito Santo, the club is gearing up for a rapid return to the Premier League and is actively hunting for players who can dominate at Championship level but still carry top-flight quality.

Vargas fits that profile. Under contract at Sevilla until June 2029, he only arrived in Andalusia a year ago yet is already being linked with a move away. Last season he made 25 appearances in all competitions, 24 of them in La Liga, contributing three goals and six assists. Not spectacular numbers, but enough to catch the eye of clubs looking for a direct, creative wide threat.

West Ham’s interest is serious enough that initial contact has reportedly been made. The challenge is obvious: they are trying to tempt a current La Liga winger while outside the Premier League, with two established English top-flight clubs and a major Turkish side also in the frame.

A potential Summerville successor

Inside the London Stadium, Vargas is being viewed as a possible answer to a looming problem. Crysencio Summerville’s future remains uncertain, with the former Leeds United winger attracting attention elsewhere. If he goes, West Ham lose one of their primary attacking sparks.

Vargas offers a similar profile. Comfortable off the left, he prefers to cut inside onto his right foot, driving at defenders and looking to combine or shoot. In Nuno’s system, that kind of inverted winger could become a key outlet, especially in a division where one moment of individual quality can unlock packed defences.

He would instantly deepen West Ham’s attacking options and add genuine competition in the wide areas. His pace and trickery, sharpened in both the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg and La Liga with Sevilla, would pose a serious test for Championship full-backs who are unlikely to have faced many wingers of his pedigree.

The pull of Europe – and the hard reality

This is where the battle gets complicated for West Ham.

Tottenham and Aston Villa can both offer Premier League football. Villa, on top of that, can dangle European nights – a powerful lure for a player in his prime. Trabzonspor, with their passionate support and status in the Turkish Super Lig, provide another attractive route for Vargas if he opts for a different kind of challenge.

West Ham, by contrast, are selling a project. Regular game time. A starring role. The chance to be the face of a promotion push at a club with a huge fanbase and a stadium built for the top flight. For a player wanting minutes and responsibility, that carries weight.

Yet there is no escaping the financial gap. The Hammers cannot realistically go toe-to-toe with Tottenham or Aston Villa on wages or fees right now. They are no longer a Premier League club, and every negotiation this summer will be coloured by that fact.

A test of West Ham’s pull

For Vargas, the decision will likely come down to status versus opportunity. Stay in a top league or join a club one step down with the promise of being central to a revival.

West Ham’s pursuit of the Swiss international is more than just another name on a list. It is an early test of how much pull they still have while outside the Premier League – and how persuasive Nuno Espirito Santo and the club’s hierarchy can be when the biggest stage is, for now, out of reach.
