Tchouameni Faces Summer Transfer Dilemma as United Eye Move
Aurelien Tchouameni spent last season holding together a Real Madrid midfield that often looked frayed at the edges. Now, in a twist that underlines how ruthless elite football can be, he finds himself at the centre of one of the summer’s biggest transfer plots.
Manchester United have moved into position. According to Jose Felix Diaz, speaking on Ruben Martin’s livestream, the Premier League club are ready to put serious money and a five-year contract on the table to prise the Frenchman away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
They are not shopping for luxury. They are shopping out of necessity.
Casemiro’s departure to Inter Miami has ripped a hole in United’s midfield structure, leaving a vacancy for a commanding presence at the base of the team. The original plan pointed towards Mateus Fernandes, but the Portuguese midfielder has already committed his future to Tottenham after leaving West Ham. With that door slammed shut, Old Trafford’s gaze has shifted to Madrid.
Tchouameni, 24, now sits at the top of United’s list. Early contacts over what would rank among the most expensive moves of the window are expected in the coming days. The intention is clear: build a new spine around him.
Tchouameni’s dilemma: Bernabeu status or Old Trafford stage?
For all the noise around him, Tchouameni’s stance has remained relatively simple. He wants to stay at Real Madrid. He was one of their better midfield performers last season, and he sees himself as part of the club’s medium-term core.
But the landscape is changing around him.
Jose Mourinho’s arrival has triggered a squad overhaul. Real Madrid are exploring the market for another central midfielder, with Enzo Fernandez identified as a prime target. If that move materialises, competition in the centre of the pitch will become even more intense.
At United, the picture looks very different. A move to Old Trafford would almost certainly hand Tchouameni greater prominence and responsibility in the Premier League, both on the ball and in the dressing room. For a player entering his prime years, that carries weight.
For now, his focus is elsewhere. The France international is nursing an injury picked up before the Round of 16 tie against Paraguay and is a doubt for the quarterfinal against Morocco. Manu Kone stands ready to step in if Tchouameni cannot start, underlining the fine line he must walk between club intrigue and international duty.
The decision on his future will not wait forever. Nor will United.
Arbeloa’s Fulham turn to Madrid – and three familiar names
While Tchouameni weighs his options, another Real Madrid storyline is unfolding in London.
Alvaro Arbeloa, a former Madrid defender and youth coach, has taken over at Fulham on a three-year deal. His first instinct as a new Premier League manager? Look back towards the club he knows best.
According to Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, Arbeloa wants to bring Franco Mastantuono, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia to Craven Cottage, with one loan move and two permanent deals under consideration.
The plan is straightforward on paper. Fulham would like Mastantuono on loan, while pushing to sign Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia permanently. For Arbeloa, these are not speculative punts. They are players whose strengths and personalities he understands, ideal building blocks for installing his ideas quickly in a new dressing room.
For Real Madrid, the situation is far more nuanced.
Three players, three different calls
The three cases sit on very different tracks inside the Bernabeu offices.
Fran Garcia appears closest to the exit. A €4 million move to Real Betis is already progressing and is expected to be completed soon. The arrival of Marc Cucurella and the presence of Alvaro Carreras have effectively shut the door on meaningful minutes for Fran at Madrid. From the club’s point of view, his sale is a question of timing rather than principle.
Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono are a different story. Both are currently in Mourinho’s plans, at least until the end of pre-season. The Portuguese coach wants to assess them up close before making any definitive call on their futures.
Loaning Mastantuono to Fulham would be a strategic decision. Regular Premier League football could accelerate his development if Madrid feel his immediate opportunities in Spain will be limited. Selling Gonzalo, on the other hand, would be a far bigger step, both in terms of talent and long-term planning.
Any permanent departures will have to make sense on two fronts: the fee on the table and the impact on squad depth. Madrid know they cannot afford to strip too much potential from a squad already facing a summer of upheaval.
Yet there is a subtle advantage here. Having a trusted former Madrid figure like Arbeloa keen on players whose futures need resolving gives the club a degree of control and comfort in negotiations that they might not enjoy elsewhere.
Now the questions are clear. Will United turn their interest in Tchouameni into an offer Real Madrid cannot refuse? And how far will Madrid go in reshaping their squad if Fulham push hard for Arbeloa’s chosen trio?
