Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes Resolve Public Disagreement Over Assist Record

Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes have drawn a line under their public spat over the Premier League assist record, with the former Manchester United captain revealing the pair shared what he called a “lovely chat” to clear the air.

The disagreement began when Keane, speaking on The Overlap last month, recalled Fernandes supposedly admitting he had chosen to pass rather than shoot while chasing the all‑time Premier League single‑season assist mark. The problem? Fernandes had said the exact opposite in the original interview.

The current United captain did not let it slide. Appearing on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Fernandes accused Keane of telling a “lie” and made it clear he wanted to speak directly to the 54-year-old to sort out the misunderstanding.

Keane has now confirmed that conversation took place, and that any tension has been defused.

On the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the Sky Sports pundit explained how the two United figures connected after the row gathered momentum online and across broadcasts.

“He apologised, I forgave him, no problem,” Keane said with a smile, before stressing that the exchange was far from confrontational. “There was a reaction after what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat… I called him and we had a lovely chat.”

The Irishman described it as a “nice, mature conversation” that roamed well beyond one misquoted line about assists.

“A lovely chat about a bit of everything,” Keane said. “When we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards and it doesn’t come across properly, so people get upset and he said he wanted to talk to me.

“And we had a nice, mature conversation. It was lovely. A lovely chat.”

Keane underlined that he prefers a healthy distance from current players, but accepted that this was one of those moments that demanded a direct phone call rather than another media soundbite.

“I like having boundaries with players. I don’t want to be speaking to players every few weeks or their agents, I don’t want to go down that road,” he said. “But every now and then a player might reach out, so it was important I spoke to him.”

The context matters. Fernandes is not just any player; he is the captain of Manchester United and the man who has just rewritten the Premier League record books.

The Portugal international set a new benchmark for assists in a single Premier League season, moving past the revered total of 20 shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. His creative output has framed his campaign as one of sustained influence at Old Trafford, with his long-term role and future naturally under scrutiny as United reshape under new leadership off the pitch.

Keane acknowledged that weight, and the symbolism of two eras of United leadership talking things through properly.

“There has been lots going on and lots reported. He’s obviously a big player for United, I’m an ex‑United player and the idea of this communicating and having a proper conversation, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully he did as well.

“Nice chat about a bit of everything and I felt better afterwards.”

While Fernandes’ name dominates the headlines on the pitch, another Fernandes is on United’s radar off it.

The club are exploring a move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Sky Sports News reporting that the Hammers value the Portuguese player at around £80m. West Ham, relegated from the Premier League, are under no immediate pressure to sell, having brought him in for an initial £38m last summer.

United are carrying out detailed background checks and due diligence on the 20-year-old, viewing him as a realistic target as they prioritise reinforcing their midfield options in this window.

One Fernandes has already broken records at Old Trafford. The next few weeks will show whether another will be brought in to help shape the next phase of United’s rebuild.
