Rafael Leao's Admiration for Ronaldo Sparks Manchester United Interest

Rafael Leao has never hidden his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo. Now that admiration has nudged him closer to the spotlight at Old Trafford.

The AC Milan forward has named Manchester United as his favourite Premier League club, a seemingly casual admission that lands with real weight in a summer when United are hunting for a winger and Leao’s future is under scrutiny.

Speaking on the Cernucci podcast, the Portugal international was asked if he follows the Premier League and whether he has a preferred team. His answer will have pricked ears in Manchester.

“Yeah of course,” he said. “I like (Manchester) United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, so back then, I used to watch them. I like Arsenal also.”

A simple line. A significant hint.

United’s winger search meets a cut-price opportunity

United’s recruitment team are already deep into their summer rebuild, and Leao sits firmly in the bracket of players who could transform an attack. The 26-year-old has hit 60 goals in 291 appearances for Milan and, crucially, could now be available for around £43m.

That figure, for a player with his profile and pedigree, would normally be unthinkable. But Milan’s failure to qualify for European football has shifted the financial landscape and opened a door for Europe’s elite.

United are not alone at that door. Chelsea and Barcelona have both been linked with Leao, attracted by his ability to stretch defences, carry the ball at pace and operate across the frontline. Interest has also emerged from Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, with Galatasaray and Fenerbahce both keen, but recent reports indicate he has no desire to move there at this stage of his career.

So the picture is clear: a Champions League club, a major European league, and a project that matches his ambition. United can tick those boxes again.

Carrick’s United look to level up

The context at Old Trafford has changed quickly. Michael Carrick guided United to a third-placed finish and a return to the Champions League, restoring some sense of direction after turbulent seasons. The reward is a seat back at Europe’s top table. The challenge is to build a squad capable of staying there.

United are already closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a deal worth around £38m, and that move is expected to be the first of several. The club know the squad lacks depth and variety in wide areas, and the departure of certain players has only sharpened that need.

Carrick has been clear about the scale of the task and the reality of the window.

“I think the beauty of the next transfer window, for everybody, it's always the biggest thing in the world, and the most important transfer window of all time, for every club, I think,” he said. “That's just the nature of how it's been created, to be honest, and I think, again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do.

“I think it's acknowledged we're at this stage, and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we're at, where we've ended up getting to, and finishing in the league, there's obviously work to do.

“It's quite obvious, with certain players leaving, there's a bit of work to do, but this one is not any more important than the last one, it's what's ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of it.”

The message is measured, but the implication is stark: United cannot stand still.

A window shaped by Ronaldo’s shadow?

Leao’s words about Ronaldo cut to the heart of United’s enduring pull. For a generation of players, Old Trafford is still the stage where their childhood idol became a superstar. That nostalgia does not sign contracts, but it does create an emotional connection that can tip a decision.

United, for their part, are trying to move into a new era without losing that aura. The club’s return to the Champions League, Carrick’s steady hand and a more targeted approach in the market all point to a different kind of project than the scattergun spending of recent years.

Leao, a player entering his prime, available at a reduced fee, openly fond of United because of Ronaldo. The ingredients are there.

Now the question is whether United turn a flattering comment on a podcast into a statement signing that fits their new direction, or watch another elite talent choose a different path.
