Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona Future in Doubt After Manchester United Reject Bid

Marcus Rashford’s chances of turning his Barcelona loan into a permanent stay have taken a sharp hit, with Manchester United knocking back the Spanish club’s opening offer for the forward.

Barcelona, encouraged by Rashford’s strong loan spell, have moved early to keep him. Their first proposal, though, has landed with a thud at Old Trafford. According to SPORT, the Catalan side tabled a bid of around €15 million — barely half of the €30 million purchase option both clubs had written into the original loan agreement.

United’s answer was swift. And predictable. No.

A €30m clause that nobody wants to pay

When Rashford joined Barcelona on loan, the €30 million option felt like a reasonable compromise: a safety net for United, an attainable target for Barça if the move went well. The problem now is that Barcelona no longer see that figure as realistic.

They view €30 million as excessive for a player they like, but not at any price. United, on the other hand, show no sign of slashing their demands. The rejected €15 million offer only underlined the gulf in valuation between the two clubs.

That gap leaves Rashford stuck in the middle.

He is not seen as central to Manchester United’s long-term plans, yet the club still want a proper fee. Barcelona would like to keep him, but only on their terms. The player’s preference is clear: he wants to stay at Camp Nou. His will, however, does not control the market.

Rashford set for pre-season return

Unless something gives, Rashford will report back to Manchester United for pre-season when training resumes. He is expected to be part of the early preparations, to pull on the United training kit again, to go through the drills and friendlies.

But that does not mean he is part of the project. Inside the club, there is little belief he will play a meaningful role once the new campaign kicks off. For now, he is an asset to be managed, not a cornerstone to be built around.

That status only complicates the situation. United want to sell. Barcelona want a deal on reduced terms. Neither side, at this stage, is blinking.

Gordon arrival tightens the squeeze at Barcelona

Even if Barcelona eventually find common ground with United over a fee, Rashford faces another, more immediate problem in Catalonia: competition.

The arrival of Anthony Gordon has changed the landscape. His signing adds another high-profile option to an already crowded attacking line, ramping up the fight for minutes in the wide and forward positions.

Rashford thrived in a more forgiving environment during his loan spell, with clearer pathways to the starting XI. That picture has shifted. Any permanent move now would drop him into a far more intense battle for a place, with Gordon’s presence making every selection call that little bit harsher.

So the equation is brutal in its simplicity.

Barcelona must first find a way to satisfy Manchester United financially. Then Rashford, if he returns, must prove he belongs in an attack that has moved on without waiting for him.

For a player who wants clarity before the new season, the answers are nowhere in sight yet.
