Manchester United have been handed an invitation to crash Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola – but anyone expecting a straightforward tug-of-war for the Paris Saint-Germain winger has misread the room.

This is shaping up to be a high-stakes auction, not a bargain hunt.

Liverpool’s Salah problem meets PSG’s Barcola dilemma

At Anfield, the need is urgent and obvious. Mohamed Salah has gone, nine glittering years behind him, a gaping hole on the right of Liverpool’s attack ahead. Andoni Iraola wants a ready-made, high-level winger to anchor his first forward line. Inside the club, Barcola has moved from long-term admiration to first-choice status.

He fits the profile: 23, explosive, direct, technically sharp, and already hardened by life at one of Europe’s most pressurised clubs. But he’s also stuck.

Barcola has watched his minutes shrink under Luis Enrique. He has slipped behind Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue in the pecking order. With Maghnes Akliouche poised to arrive and talks progressing for Yan Diomande – once Liverpool’s main focus – the message to the Frenchman is clear: his path to regular football in Paris is closing fast.

He has told Enrique he is unhappy. He wants out. He wants a fresh start this summer.

PSG light the fuse

You might expect PSG to sit down with Liverpool and start negotiating. Instead, they’ve chosen a different route.

Reports in France say the French champions have gone wide, informing several of Europe’s elite that Barcola is available and effectively inviting them to bid. According to RMC Sport, Manchester United have been explicitly encouraged to enter the race, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also made aware of the opportunity.

The suggested starting price? Around €70m (£59.5m, $80m).

That figure already places Barcola in serious-money territory. But it doesn’t come close to what sources indicate PSG actually want.

A price designed to scare – or cash in?

Inside the corridors at PSG, Barcola remains highly rated. Luis Enrique still believes in him. So does club advisor Luis Campos. And with English transfer fees inflating almost weekly, PSG sense an opening.

Sources indicate that privately, the French champions are ready to demand closer to €150m (£127.5m, $171m) to even consider a sale. Publicly, they maintain that Barcola is not for sale at all.

Behind the scenes, that stance looks increasingly like posturing.

Barcola’s representatives have been working on his future for weeks. They’ve spoken to several of Europe’s biggest clubs. Intermediaries have now relayed PSG’s financial expectations to those tracking the situation. The winger has made it clear he wants to leave to secure regular first-team football.

And there is another layer. PSG are understood to be actively seeking sales to ease pressure from financial regulations. With Barcola unwilling so far to sign a new deal – and his current contract running down, with under two years left – the club is edging towards a familiar fork in the road: sell now for a premium or risk losing leverage later.

The tension between their public stance and private reality is growing.

United’s interest comes with a Rashford-sized condition

Manchester United have been pulled into the story, but their role is complicated.

PSG’s invitation to bid is genuine. United are on the list. Yet any serious move from Old Trafford hinges on one thing: Marcus Rashford.

Sources indicate United will only go after a new left-sided winger if they can move Rashford on. His hopes of a permanent switch to Barcelona have faded, and as things stand, United are preparing to reintegrate the 28-year-old into their squad.

That limits their room to manoeuvre. Unless a major sale materialises, United’s interest in Barcola may remain more theoretical than concrete.

Anfield advantage?

Liverpool’s position looks cleaner.

Barcola is understood to be particularly keen on a move to Anfield. Personal terms are not expected to be a major obstacle if Liverpool and PSG can find common ground. The winger has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, and within the club there is a calm confidence about adding more quality before the window closes.

Reports on Sunday even suggested that Liverpool have already lodged a bid. Whether that offer comes close to PSG’s towering valuation is another matter entirely.

What is clear is that Barcola is seen internally as the calibre of signing Iraola must push for. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has described him as one of three “huge” additions the new manager should insist on this summer.

He is not the only PSG player linked with a reunion, either. Liverpool are being tipped to bring in another of Iraola’s former charges, a physically dominant presence the coach is said to “like”, with suggestions that “a deal makes sense”.

A test of resolve on all sides

So the stage is set.

PSG want top dollar and a show of strength. Barcola wants out and minutes on the pitch. Liverpool want a statement replacement for Salah. United hover on the fringes, tempted but restricted by Rashford’s future.

Somewhere between those competing needs lies the real price.

If PSG hold out for €150m, they may discover the limits of the English market’s inflation. If they blink first, Liverpool – and perhaps a late-arriving rival – will be ready.
