Manchester City’s Bid for Elliot Anderson Rejected

Manchester City’s opening move for Elliot Anderson has been knocked back, but this saga is only just warming up.

Nottingham Forest have rejected City’s first bid for the midfielder, who is increasingly expected to leave the City Ground this summer after a standout season. City’s interest, long-standing and now formal, has been reported by The Athletic, with Forest holding firm at the first attempt.

Anderson, 23, has rapidly become one of the most coveted talents in the Premier League. BBC Sport reported last week that the England international is leaning towards a switch to Etihad Stadium rather than Manchester United, a choice that underlines the pull of Pep Guardiola’s side at the very top of the market.

His timing could hardly be better. Anderson has just been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup and is currently preparing for the tournament across the US, Canada and Mexico. While he focuses on international duty, the clubs can continue to haggle in the background.

Any agreement will not come cheap. A potential fee has been described as likely to set a new record for a British player, eclipsing the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023.

Forest know they hold a premium asset; City know this is the level of investment required to refresh a title-winning midfield.

Anderson’s rise from Newcastle academy graduate to headline transfer target has not gone unnoticed at the Etihad. City have tracked him for a long time and, with captain Bernardo Silva heading for the exit, the need for a new creative heartbeat is pressing. Inside the recruitment department, Anderson sits at the top of the list.

He is not the only name on that board. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is also understood to be highly rated by City, with reports suggesting the Italy international has been monitored as a long-term option. That interest reflects City’s broader plan: to rebuild the next great midfield while the current one is still winning.

Change is Coming

Change is coming in other areas too. Nico Gonzalez, who missed out on Spain’s World Cup squad and slipped out of favour under Guardiola last season, could leave if a suitable offer arrives. His situation only sharpens the sense that this is a summer of transition in Manchester, not just fine-tuning.

The reshaping is not confined to the centre of the pitch. City are also in the market for a right-back to supplement Matheus Nunes, 28, who impressed after being converted from midfield and used in that role this season. His reinvention has bought City time, but not a long-term solution.

Recruitment staff are targeting a young, natural full-back who can grow into the role and eventually own that flank for years. It is the same profile they now seek in midfield: players who can bridge eras, not just plug gaps.

For all the moving parts, one storyline dominates. City have made their play for Elliot Anderson. Forest have said no to the first offer. The question now is how far the champions are willing to go to make him the next record-breaking centrepiece of their evolution.
