Liverpool's Fury Over Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool are braced for a fight they never wanted and have no intention of losing.

Bayern Munich, never shy when it comes to raiding Europe’s elite, have turned their gaze towards 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha – and the mood on Merseyside is said to be incandescent.

The story first surfaced via The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who revealed that the Bundesliga champions were exploring what was described as a “surprise move” for the teenager. Ngumoha, fresh from catching the eye on his senior England debut last weekend, is understood to be aware of Bayern’s interest and intentions.

What Bayern have not done, according to those reports, is pick up the phone to Liverpool.

Inside Anfield, the response has been blunt. Club figures insist the winger is not for sale. Not for the right price. Not for any price.

‘Liverpool will be fuming’

Mick Brown, the former Manchester United chief scout, believes Liverpool’s anger will run far deeper than a routine transfer enquiry.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown laid bare how the situation will be viewed at a club that has just lost Mo Salah and is now watching another attacking jewel being courted.

“Liverpool will be doing everything in their power to stop Ngumoha leaving. They’ve already lost Salah, and this young lad has come into the team and made a splash,” he said.

“He’s obviously got great talent and they rate him very highly, so they need look no further than the options they’ve already got available, because he already looks like he’s ready to come in and play a regular part in the side.”

Then came the crux of the matter: the manner of Bayern’s move.

“I was always under the impression that approaching players without the club’s knowledge was illegal, but it always seems to happen and to be allowed to happen,” Brown continued. “Of course, these things happen, but it’s not usually as out in the open as this has been, and that’s not going to go down well.

“I have no doubt Liverpool will be fuming, because their best talents are being approached by clubs like Bayern Munich and they have no knowledge of it. Liverpool are not going to let that happen, they’re not going to let him go, and especially not to Bayern Munich now that this has happened.”

That last line cuts to the heart of Liverpool’s stance. Bayern have not just picked the wrong player; they may have picked the wrong club at the wrong time.

A talent Liverpool will not cash in on

Inside the Liverpool hierarchy, Ngumoha is seen as one of the cornerstones of the next era. At 17, he has already made a compelling first impression at senior level, and the expectation is that his trajectory points towards genuine world-class status.

You do not sell that. You build around it.

His emergence comes at a delicate moment for Liverpool’s forward line. Salah has gone. Hugo Ekitike is sidelined for months. The depth chart in attack looks thinner than it has for years.

In that context, the idea of cashing in on a gifted teenager wearing the no.73 shirt is not just unlikely. It is absurd.

Andoni Iraola’s arrival only strengthens that position. The new Liverpool head coach has a clear reputation for trusting youth and has already spoken of his intention to do exactly that at Anfield. Ngumoha sits at the front of that queue. Premier League minutes beckon. Champions League nights, too.

This is not a player angling for an escape route or stuck behind a wall of established stars. This is a teenager standing on the threshold of a major role at one of the world’s biggest clubs.

So when Bayern come calling, Liverpool’s answer is simple: not now, not soon, and quite possibly not ever.

The German champions are used to getting what they want in the transfer market. This time, they may have sparked something else entirely – a hardened resolve at Anfield to ringfence a prodigy they see as non-negotiable to their future.
