Koundé's Fitness Update Ahead of World Cup

France’s 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Lille delivered a brief jolt of anxiety on Monday night, but the mood around Jules Koundé has quickly settled. The Barcelona defender, withdrawn at half-time, is not considered a doubt for the World Cup, according to L’Équipe.

Koundé’s departure raised eyebrows precisely because it came without warning. No tactical reshuffle. No obvious incident. Just a straight swap at the break, with Chelsea full-back Malo Gusto sent on in his place.

The explanation was more mundane than alarming. L’Équipe report that Koundé felt muscular pain and Didier Deschamps chose not to take a single risk in a friendly that France were already controlling. The decision was precautionary, not punitive.

Crucially for Les Bleus, the same report underlines there is no concern over his fitness heading into the tournament in North America. Despite an uneven, often testing season at Barcelona, Koundé remains the man Deschamps intends to start on the right of his defence when the real football begins.

Right-Back Contenders

That right-back slot is not short of contenders, though. Gusto, who stepped in at the break in Lille, offers energy and aggression out wide and has already shown he can live with the demands at Chelsea. Paris Saint-Germain’s Warren Zaire-Emery is another option. The teenager has impressed when asked to fill in there for his club, his tactical discipline and maturity adding another layer to France’s depth chart.

For now, the hierarchy is clear: Koundé first, the rest waiting for an opening.

France’s preparations now cross the Atlantic. The squad will train in the United States for the first time on Thursday, sharpening details and managing minutes with one eye firmly on their World Cup opener against Senegal on Tuesday.

Koundé is expected to be there, in his usual place, as France begin another campaign with the familiar weight of expectation on their shoulders.
