John Barnes Supports Slot's Liverpool Approach, Critiques Salah's Comments

John Barnes has thrown his weight behind Arne Slot’s decision to trust Liverpool’s existing squad, while sharply criticising Mohamed Salah’s public insistence that the club must stick to Jurgen Klopp’s trademark “heavy metal” football.

The former Anfield winger, speaking to Betfred, dismissed the idea that a transfer splurge is the shortcut to solving Liverpool’s next tactical evolution under Slot.

“The solution to the problem isn’t just signing players because we have players here,” Barnes said, pointing directly at the attacking options already in the building. “If somebody comes in, then what are we going to do with [Alexander] Isak, [Hugo] Ekitike and Rio Ngumoha, who’s coming through. We don’t need to sign anybody as far as I’m concerned because we need to work with what we have.”

That message cuts against the mood music of every window. New manager, new era, new wishlist. Barnes isn’t buying it.

“We need to get the balance right, we need to get the blend right,” he continued. “Unfortunately people believe the solution to any problem is just to keep signing more players. I’ve seen we’ve been linked with Jarrod Bowen because West Ham United have been relegated, but I think what we have already is enough and I’m sure they can all stick together and work together.”

For Barnes, the key word is cohesion, not recruitment. Slot, in his eyes, has more than enough raw material; the job now is to shape it, not replace it.

That theme of authority and identity ran straight into his assessment of Salah’s recent comments. The Egyptian, who is leaving the club, had effectively framed Klopp’s high-octane style as a non‑negotiable for any Liverpool manager. Barnes did not hold back.

“Absolutely, Slot did the right thing,” he said of the coach’s decision to start Salah in his Anfield farewell, alongside Andy Robertson. “I mean, Salah’s going, so if he was staying it could have been a bit different, but as he’s going, it was good for everybody to see Mo leave on a high. But I think Mo was wrong to do what he did and what he said.”

Then came the crux of it.

“If you analyse what Mo said, he’s saying that any Liverpool manager needs to be subservient to the way Jurgen Klopp played as a non-negotiable, which is rubbish. Any manager at Liverpool needs to say they’re doing it their way, not Jurgen’s way, so for Mo to say that ‘heavy metal football’ is a non-negotiable is crazy and ridiculous, so he was wrong to say it.”

Barnes still reserved respect for Salah’s legacy, but made it clear where he felt the power should lie.

“I think Arne Slot was the bigger man to give Mo his send-off for being a great servant.”

The message is unmistakable: Liverpool’s future, on the touchline and in the transfer market, belongs to Slot – not to the memory of Klopp, and not to the demands of departing stars.
