Atletico Madrid Confronts Barcelona Over Alvarez Transfer
What began as a transfer story turned into a public feud on Thursday, as Atletico Madrid used their official channels to mock, then directly confront, FC Barcelona over the Catalan club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez.
The spark came from a familiar source. Fabrizio Romano reported earlier in the day that Barcelona had tabled an opening bid of €100 million for Alvarez, the forward currently at Atletico. Within hours, the Madrid club turned the rumour mill into a battleground.
Mockery in red and white
Atletico’s first response was not a formal statement but a volley of irony.
Across their social media accounts, the Rojiblancos posted “offers” of their own, using tongue‑in‑cheek graphics that showed several Barcelona players wearing the Atleti kit. The message was obvious: if Barcelona could move so boldly for one of theirs, Atletico could at least pretend to do the same.
They didn’t stop at players. Barcelona sporting director Deco was dragged into the theatre with a sarcastic post suggesting Atletico had “not offered” him a role in their scouting department in Brazil. It was a pointed jab at the man fronting Barça’s latest rebuild and the face of their Alvarez push.
The tone was playful, but the target was clear. Barcelona’s transfer approach had become a meme.
Then the mood changed.
From jokes to a furious statement
As the posts gathered traction, Atletico shifted gear. The club released a written statement that dropped the irony and went straight for confrontation, describing what they see as a sustained campaign around Alvarez.
“No, Atletico Madrid would never do something like that. However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players,” the statement opened, swerving from mock denial into a serious accusation.
The club listed its grievances:
- “Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the Cule version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups…”
The language left little room for interpretation. Atletico believe stories around Alvarez have not simply emerged, but been driven, and they clearly link that to Barcelona’s orbit and timing around key fixtures.
Then came the most explosive line.
“But of course, it wouldn’t occur to us either to have the referees’ vice president on our payroll or to resort to political favors to register players. RESPECT and VALUES.”
With that sentence, Atletico dragged the Negreira case straight into the spotlight, using one of the most damaging scandals in Barcelona’s recent history as a counterpunch in a transfer dispute. This was no longer just about a bid for a forward. It was about reputation, power, and who gets to control the story.
Barcelona’s plan and Deco’s role
Behind the noise, the football logic is simple. After securing Anthony Gordon, Barcelona have moved quickly to identify Alvarez as their next major signing to reinforce the attack.
Earlier in the week, Deco met with Fernando Hidalgo, Alvarez’s agent. That meeting laid the groundwork for the formal proposal that, according to Romano’s report, landed on Atletico’s desk today: €100 million as an opening offer.
For Barcelona, Alvarez represents another cornerstone piece in a squad that still feels in transition. For Atletico, he is not only an asset but now the centre of a wider narrative they clearly feel is being manipulated from outside.
So a transfer chase that might normally play out in boardrooms and encrypted calls has burst into public view, fought in statements, memes, and pointed references to old scandals.
If this is only the opening offer, what happens when the negotiations really start to bite?
