Arsenal Targets Newcastle Duo Guimaraes and Tonali for Midfield Rebuild

Arsenal have opened the throttle on their midfield rebuild, holding exploratory talks over ambitious moves for Newcastle duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

This is not a scattergun trawl of the market. The plan is clear: one leading central midfielder, a statement signing to reshape the heart of Mikel Arteta’s side. The shortlist, though, is anything but small.

Guimaraes and Tonali in Arsenal’s sights

Discussions have already taken place with the camps of both Guimaraes and Tonali to gauge the conditions and feasibility of a deal. No bid has gone in to Newcastle yet, but Arsenal have made their interest known and are doing their homework early.

Newcastle, for their part, are in no mood to roll over.

They have already rejected an offer of around £80m from Tottenham Hotspur for Tonali and are adamant they do not want to lose Guimaraes, their captain and emotional leader. Guimaraes, 28, still has two years left on his contract and remains locked in on international duty with Brazil at the World Cup, where they face Japan in the last 32.

Tonali’s situation is even more fortified. Manchester City are monitoring developments and Newcastle are in a strong position to push for a fee closer to £100m. The Italian is effectively tied to the club until 2030 after signing a new contract during his 10‑month betting ban, a gesture that underlined the club’s faith and strengthened their negotiating hand.

In a market where midfielders are changing hands for eye-watering sums, Newcastle know the terrain. Manchester City have agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson at a club-record £116m, while West Ham are holding out for up to £80m for 21-year-old Mateus Fernandes. Against that backdrop, any bidding war for Tonali or Guimaraes would tilt in Newcastle’s favour.

Age will weigh heavily on Arsenal’s calculations. Guimaraes turns 29 in November, Tonali only just turned 26 in May. Both are in or approaching their peak, but any nine-figure outlay would be judged against their resale value and longevity in north London.

Younger options on the table

Arsenal are not putting all their chips on Newcastle’s table. The club have also shown firm interest in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, 22, who is attracting attention from Manchester United and Chelsea.

Scott offers a different profile: younger, cheaper, and with years of development ahead of him. Inside Arsenal, the merits of a move for Lille’s Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi are being weighed up in the same conversations that include West Ham’s Fernandes, another player high on Tottenham’s list.

This is classic Andrea Berta territory. Arsenal’s sporting director is known for running multiple negotiations in parallel, pushing each deal to the brink before deciding which one to execute. It keeps options open, keeps selling clubs guessing, and often drags prices into more favourable territory.

Midfield dominoes at Arsenal

One thing is non-negotiable: a major midfield arrival means someone has to go.

Arsenal are prepared to listen to offers for Denmark international Christian Norgaard, now 32, whose future would be directly threatened by a marquee signing in his position. Any deal for a high-end central midfielder would also cast a shadow over Martin Zubimendi’s status as an automatic starter next season, forcing Arteta to recalibrate his core.

The stakes are obvious. Land Guimaraes and Arsenal gain a seasoned leader with Premier League pedigree. Win the race for Tonali and they secure a dynamic, long-term anchor in front of the defence. Pivot to Scott, Bouaddi or Fernandes and the club lean into youth, upside and financial flexibility.

Arsenal have started the summer by asking big questions of Newcastle and of the market. The real question now is how bold they are prepared to be when it is time to answer them.
