Arbeloa Confirms Real Madrid Exit as Mourinho Returns
Alvaro Arbeloa stood behind the microphone and did not dodge. "Yes," he said. One word to confirm what everyone at the Santiago Bernabeu already sensed: he will not be coaching Real Madrid next season.
On Saturday, Los Blancos face Athletic Bilbao in their final La Liga match of a turbulent campaign. It will be Arbeloa’s last game in charge, and very likely the final act of a brief, intense spell on the Real Madrid touchline.
The backdrop is unmistakable. Widespread reports point to the return of Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese veteran poised to take the reins again in Madrid. Florentino Perez turned to Arbeloa in January, asking him to step up and replace Xabi Alonso. Now the president is preparing for another change, with Mourinho expected to succeed him.
Arbeloa made one thing clear: if Mourinho walks back through the Bernabeu doors, he will not be part of the Portuguese coach’s staff.
"Mou has a fantastic technical team, he's got good people around him, if he comes to Madrid he will come with his team," Arbeloa said. "There's no chance that I would be with him. Then, my future... from Monday I'll think about that."
No drama. No public frustration. Just a firm line and a pause for whatever comes next.
For Arbeloa, this is not just another job ending. The 41-year-old is stitched into the fabric of the club. He played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2016, then returned to work in the youth ranks, grooming the next generation in Valdebebas. Two decades in white, in different roles, have shaped his life.
"I hope it's a see you later... I've always considered this my home, I've belonged to Madrid for 20 years in various roles," he said, hoping the door remains ajar.
On Saturday, he will walk out at the Bernabeu as first-team coach one last time this season, unsure if that walk will ever be repeated.
"It will be my last game this season as coach of Real Madrid, I don't know if it will be the last game of my life as coach of Real Madrid," he admitted. "We never know. I'll try and enjoy it and try to get the win."
One game left, under the lights, with uncertainty in the air and Mourinho’s shadow stretching across the city. For Arbeloa, it is both an ending and a test: can he turn a farewell into a “see you later” at the club he still calls home?
