Robbie Keane Steps Down as Ferencváros Coach
Robbie Keane has stepped down from his role as head coach of Ferencváros, bringing an abrupt halt to a highly productive spell in Budapest.
The 45-year-old leaves after 18 months in charge, a period in which he restored the club’s edge and collected silverware. Ferencváros lifted the Hungarian Cup this season and finished second in the league, a return that underlined Keane’s impact in a short window.
Last season, he had already delivered the ultimate domestic prize, guiding the capital club to the top-flight title. His work went beyond trophies, though. Keane earned strong praise inside Hungary for his willingness to trust youth, most notably Hungary international midfielder Alex Toth, who flourished under his watch before earning a move to Bournemouth.
The Budapest job was Keane’s second major success as a manager. Before Ferencváros, he led Maccabi Tel Aviv to an Israeli league title during his single season in charge there, a campaign that helped establish him as more than just a celebrated former striker trying his hand in the dugout.
Now, attention swings quickly to what comes next.
The Republic of Ireland’s all-time record goalscorer, and one of the most recognisable forwards of his generation, is currently favourite to take over at Scottish champions Celtic. The Glasgow club know him well: Keane scored 12 goals in just 16 games during a prolific loan spell at Celtic in 2010, a brief stint that still resonates with supporters.
No announcement has been made, no deal confirmed. But a title-winning coach, fresh from success in Hungary and Israel, now sits at the top of the bookmakers’ lists for one of the most demanding jobs in British football.
Ferencváros lose a coach who delivered trophies and a pathway for young talent. Celtic may soon gain a manager with unfinished business in Glasgow.
