Ngumoha's Transfer to Bayern Munich Falls Apart

Rio Ngumoha’s proposed move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen apart, despite a full verbal agreement reportedly being in place.

The 17-year-old winger, one of the few bright spots in Liverpool’s troubled 2025/26 season, had emerged as a surprise priority target for Vincent Kompany as Bayern searched for fresh competition on the left flank. Now, just as quickly as the deal gathered pace, it has stalled.

From Anfield hope to Bayern’s “secret candidate”

Ngumoha arrived at Liverpool from Chelsea with serious expectations attached, billed inside the academy as a potential star of the next decade. Last season, he finally showed why. In a campaign that drained the mood around Anfield, the teenager’s direct running and fearlessness offered rare flashes of excitement.

Many around the club felt he merited more minutes than former head coach Arne Slot handed him. That frustration only sharpened anticipation for what he might do under Andoni Iraola, whose front-foot, aggressive style appears tailor-made for a winger who loves to attack defenders.

Yet that same promise drew eyes from Germany.

With Bayern missing out on £69m Barcelona signing Anthony Gordon, attention shifted rapidly. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Ngumoha became Bayern’s primary target for the left side, with the player fully aware of their interest. Liverpool’s stance, though, was firm: not for sale, and a clear intention to strengthen their attack, not strip it back.

A full verbal agreement – then the collapse

Behind the scenes, the story accelerated.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Bayern had been working on the move for weeks, with Ngumoha described as their “secret candidate”. By Tuesday, 26 May, Plettenberg claimed Bayern had reached a full verbal agreement with the player and his camp. Kompany, newly installed in Munich and tasked with reshaping an unconvincing side, had personally spoken to Ngumoha and given the move his approval.

For Bayern, the plan was simple: Ngumoha as an absolute priority back-up to Luis Díaz, alongside their pursuit of Gordon. A young, explosive option to rotate, to develop, and to eventually challenge.

Then, on Thursday, it all fell apart.

Plettenberg stated that the deal had “collapsed” – at least for now. No club-to-club agreement followed Liverpool’s hard line, and with Bayern also weighing potential moves for other targets such as Brown and Saibari, the window of opportunity appears to have snapped shut, or at least slammed halfway.

Liverpool’s gamble – or their stroke of luck?

Inside Liverpool, there has long been a belief that Ngumoha could “explode” next season, saving the club significant money in the transfer market. Talks over a new contract for the teenager have been in the air, and this episode will only sharpen the urgency.

For Iraola, the collapse of Bayern’s move is a gift wrapped in warning tape. He inherits a player courted by one of Europe’s superclubs, already deemed ready to step into Bayern’s first-team squad at 17. Keep him, trust him, and Liverpool may have their next attacking pillar. Lose him in a future window, and they will know exactly what they let slip.

For now, Ngumoha remains a Liverpool player. The verbal agreement with Bayern is gone. The tug-of-war, though, feels like it has only just begun.
