Martin O’Neill Extends Celtic Tenure to 2026–27 After Title Win

Martin O’Neill has signed a new one-year deal to stay on as Celtic manager, extending his second coming in the Parkhead dugout into the 2026–27 season.

The agreement is the reward for a remarkable rescue act. O’Neill had initially walked away from the role after Wilfried Nancy was handed the job on a permanent basis partway through last season. When the Frenchman was sacked just 33 days later, Celtic turned back to the Derry man – and he did what he has so often done in Glasgow. He changed everything.

The defending champions looked vulnerable, their season drifting. O’Neill steadied the dressing room, sharpened the team’s edge and dragged them back into the title race. The revival reached its peak on a breathless final day at Parkhead, where Celtic clinched the league crown against Hearts to complete a League and Cup double. It was the kind of finish that hardens boardroom resolve. There was only ever going to be one decision.

O’Neill’s extension also closes the door, for now, on one of the more intriguing managerial links of the summer. Robbie Keane, the Republic of Ireland’s record caps holder and all‑time leading goalscorer, had been heavily touted for the Celtic job after leaving his role at Ferencvaros.

Keane’s name carries weight in the East End of Glasgow. His prolific loan spell at Celtic Park in 2010 still lingers in the memory, and his managerial CV already includes league titles in Israel and Hungary. On paper, the step to Parkhead looked like a natural escalation.

But the prospect of his return did not unite the support. Keane faced criticism from sections of the Celtic fanbase over his previous association with Maccabi Tel Aviv. A statement opposing his potential appointment was reported to have been signed by “dozens” of Celtic supporters’ groups, a clear signal of unease at the idea of his arrival.

In the end, Celtic have chosen familiarity and certainty. O’Neill, the man who walked back into the chaos and walked out with a double, stays in charge. The club know exactly what they are getting: a manager who has already proved, once again, that he can handle the heat of the Parkhead hot seat when the season is on the line.
