Marcus Rashford Returns to England Squad for 2026 World Cup
Marcus Rashford has stepped back onto the international stage – and straight into the spotlight.
Named in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup after a resurgent season on loan at Barcelona, the forward moved quickly to show where his gratitude lies. His first instinct was to thank the men and clubs who helped drag his career out of a difficult spell.
“Special thanks to Unai, Hansi, Thomas, Aston Villa, Barcelona and England for believing in me when things got tough,” he posted on Instagram after Thomas Tuchel confirmed his place in the squad.
The message was heartfelt. It was also incomplete.
There was no mention of Manchester United, the club that developed him, the club he still officially belongs to. In an era where every word is scrutinised and every omission treated as a statement, that gap did not go unnoticed.
Rashford reacted quickly. A second post followed, this time on X, as he moved to shut down any suggestion of a calculated snub towards his parent club.
“To make my IG story clear. It’s not a dig of any sort! I’m a MU supporter, and that remains. I was showing gratitude to the clubs and coaches that I have worked with over the past 18 months, they have played a big role in this call up,” he wrote.
It was a revealing glimpse into his last year and a half. A player who looked lost at Old Trafford has rebuilt himself across borders and under different voices: Unai Emery at Aston Villa, Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel among the influential figures in his revival. Barcelona, too, provided a stage big enough for his talent and a platform strong enough for his confidence to return.
The reward is significant. After the pain of missing Euro 2024, Rashford now heads into a World Cup with a point to prove and a place in an England squad that will expect to go deep into the tournament.
England’s route begins with a group that offers both danger and opportunity: Croatia, battle-hardened and experienced; Ghana, athletic and fearless; Panama, eager to upset reputations. Rashford arrives with fresh scars, renewed belief, and a clear message about who helped him get back here.
The next chapter plays out on the biggest stage of all.
