Liverpool's Forward Line Reshaping: Trincao and Diomande on the Radar
Liverpool are edging towards a bold reshaping of their forward line, with Francisco Trincao emerging as a leading candidate to help fill the void left by Mohamed Salah’s impending exit.
Reports in Portugal claim Liverpool are now “closest” to triggering the £52m release clause of the Sporting CP winger, who produced 31 goal contributions last season and has forced his way into the heart of their summer planning.
Salah out, Diomande and Trincao in?
The wide positions at Anfield are being ripped up and redrawn. Salah is set to leave on a free transfer despite having a year left on his deal, a seismic departure that would have defined most summers on its own. This one could be even more dramatic.
Federico Chiesa has already made it clear he sees his future away from Liverpool unless new head coach Andoni Iraola can guarantee a bigger role. Cody Gakpo, meanwhile, is no longer ring-fenced. Fabrizio Romano has stated that Liverpool will listen to “important proposals” for the Dutchman.
Some claims have gone as far as suggesting Tottenham are ready to smash their transfer record for Gakpo. A more grounded scenario has been put forward by TEAMtalk, who report that Liverpool have explored using Gakpo as a makeweight in negotiations with RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande, trimming the cost of what would be a huge deal.
Diomande, the 19-year-old Ivorian, has been identified as Liverpool’s primary target for the flanks. The Athletic report that Leipzig now want in excess of €130m (£112m) for the teenager, a price that would test any club’s resolve. Liverpool, though, are not backing away. David Ornstein has reported that Liverpool are in a stronger position than PSG when it comes to agreeing personal terms with Diomande and that talks between the clubs have already begun.
The plan is clear: if as many as three wingers leave, one marquee arrival will not be enough.
Trincao’s revival turns heads at Anfield
That is where Trincao comes in. Correio da Manha recently revealed Liverpool are giving serious consideration to the Sporting winger, and that the change in the dugout has not altered that stance. Iraola’s arrival, the report stresses, “has done nothing to cool interest” in the 26-year-old.
Trincao’s career has looped back on itself in intriguing fashion. Once a highly rated prospect at Barcelona, he endured a flat loan spell at Wolves in 2021/22, a stint that seemed to stall his momentum in the Premier League. He returned to Portugal on loan with Sporting the following season, then made the move permanent in 2023. That decision has transformed him.
Last term he hit 13 goals and supplied 18 assists in all competitions, numbers that underline why he has become one of the standout wide players in Europe outside the traditional superclubs. The left-footer has now been named in the Primeira Liga team of the season for two years running, a marker of consistency as much as flair.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Liverpool have moved into pole position. The club are described as “closest” to signing Trincao by activating his €60m (£52m) release clause, with Anfield said to be “top of the list” of likely destinations if Sporting’s resolve is broken.
For Liverpool, it would form part of a double attacking rebuild: Diomande as the explosive, long-term flagship on the flank; Trincao as the polished, prime-age creator who has already rebuilt his reputation once and now stands on the brink of the biggest stage of his career.
If Salah, Gakpo and potentially Chiesa do depart, the question is no longer whether Liverpool will change their attack. It is how radically they are prepared to do it in a single summer.
