Liverpool Block Bayern's Move for Untouchable Rio Ngumoha

Bayern Munich thought they had found a secret route into Liverpool’s future. Liverpool have just bricked it up.

On a frantic Friday of briefings and counter-briefings, the German champions were revealed to be pushing hard to prise Rio Ngumoha away from Anfield this summer. By the end of the day, one thing was clear: Fenway Sports Group are not interested in talking.

Bayern’s “secret candidate” brought into the light

The story first surfaced when David Ornstein reported that Bayern are exploring a move for Ngumoha, the 17-year-old winger regarded inside Liverpool as one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League.

Ornstein detailed that Ngumoha has emerged as Bayern’s primary target for the left side, with the player aware of the interest. No formal contact has taken place between the clubs, and Liverpool’s message has been blunt: he is not for sale. The plan on Merseyside is to strengthen the attack, not tear pieces off it.

In Germany, the picture looked even more advanced. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg described Ngumoha as the “secret candidate” Bayern had been working on for weeks. According to his report, the Bavarian club reached a full verbal agreement with the teenager and his camp on Tuesday, 26 May, with Vincent Kompany personally speaking to the player and signing off on the move.

Ngumoha was labelled an “absolute priority” as back-up to Luis Díaz on the left flank, part of a wider attacking reshuffle that also includes interest in Anthony Gordon. For Bayern, the plan was clear. For now, it has fallen apart.

Plettenberg stated that the deal “collapsed” on Thursday, at least for the time being, as Bayern weigh other potential club-to-club agreements for targets such as Brown and Saibari. The German side had moved, Kompany had approved, the player’s side was aligned. The roadblock sits firmly at Anfield.

Romano: Liverpool make stance crystal clear

Enter Fabrizio Romano, and with him, the definitive word from Liverpool’s side.

The transfer specialist reported that Liverpool’s stance on Ngumoha has not shifted in recent days or weeks; it has been set in stone for months. The 17-year-old is considered “untouchable” and a crucial part of the club’s long-term project, with “no chance” of an exit this summer.

That line tallies with the mood around FSG’s approach. The owners, often accused of being too willing to cash in at the right price, are taking a very different view here. Ngumoha is not a trading chip. He is a cornerstone.

For a club in transition, that matters. With a new era taking shape post-Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool cannot afford to let a highly rated teenage winger, already being targeted as depth for a club of Bayern’s stature, walk away before he has even had the chance to truly break through.

A statement that echoes beyond one teenager

This is not just a tug-of-war over a promising 17-year-old. It is a message to Europe’s elite.

Bayern identified Ngumoha, held talks, built a verbal framework, and still hit a red wall. Liverpool are drawing a line in the sand around their emerging talent, especially in attacking areas where the next generation will be asked to carry the weight of Anfield expectation.

For now, Bayern must look elsewhere for Díaz’s understudy. Liverpool, meanwhile, keep hold of a winger they believe can be far more than that.

If Ngumoha develops as those inside the club expect, this summer’s refusal will not just look firm. It will look decisive.
