Barcelona Targets Julián Álvarez for Forward Line
Barcelona are wasting no time shaping their next great forward line.
With Anthony Gordon’s arrival from Newcastle United close to the finish line, the La Liga champions have already moved their attention to the heart of the attack. At the top of their list: Julián Álvarez of Atletico Madrid.
Deco moves, Álvarez pushes
According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are preparing their first official offer to Atletico for the Argentine striker, a move that follows a face-to-face meeting earlier this week between Barça sporting director Deco and Álvarez’s agent, with Juanma Lopez acting as mediator.
The player has done his part to force the issue. Álvarez has already told Atletico Madrid that he wants to leave and has turned down a contract renewal, a clear signal that he sees his future away from the Metropolitano.
Barcelona’s plan is to move early and decisively. They want the framework of a deal in place well before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aware that a strong tournament from a 26-year-old centre-forward could trigger a bidding war they do not want to be dragged into.
A €100 million ceiling meets a €150 million wall
Inside the Camp Nou offices, there is no doubt: Álvarez is the primary centre-forward target. But there is also a hard line. Barcelona have set a limit of €100 million for the operation, a ceiling they do not intend to smash through.
Atletico Madrid see things differently. They are reluctant to strengthen a direct domestic rival and are holding out for a figure closer to €150 million. That gap, sizeable and stubborn, threatens to turn this into one of the summer’s most delicate negotiations.
The one factor in Barcelona’s favour is the player’s stance. Álvarez’s desire to leave, already communicated to Atletico, could start to weigh on the situation if the standoff drags on. Pressure from the dressing room often shifts the tone of talks, even at clubs used to negotiating from a position of strength.
For now, Barcelona are readying their opening bid and preparing to sit down with Atletico Madrid for formal talks. The first offer will not close the deal, but it will set the stage for a battle that could define who leads their line when the World Cup comes around.
