Barcelona Targets Julián Álvarez Amid Arsenal and PSG Interest

Barcelona have moved from admiration to action in the chase for Julián Álvarez – and that shift puts real heat on Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Catalan club, backed by new coach Hansi Flick, are preparing their first formal offer to Atlético Madrid for the Argentina striker, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the bid will arrive “soon” and will not include any players in part-exchange. It is a clear, cash-first play for one of the most decorated forwards in the game.

Arsenal’s long courtship faces its biggest test

Arsenal have been in this story longer than anyone. Back in January 2026, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey revealed that the London club had already opened talks with Álvarez’s representatives, setting up a summer move as a key plank of their planning.

Since then, Mikel Arteta’s side have only strengthened their hand on the pitch. A Premier League title in the bag and a Champions League final against PSG on the horizon give Arsenal a powerful sales pitch: come to the Emirates, and you walk straight into a project already operating at the very top.

Behind the scenes, the message from the player’s camp has been consistent. Bailey reported on May 25 that Álvarez’s representatives again informed Atlético that the striker wants to leave, having turned down a new contract months ago. Sources close to the situation say both Arsenal and PSG “have received encouragement that Álvarez is open to their projects” if Barcelona cannot put together a convincing proposal.

That “if” just shrank.

Barcelona push ahead with €90m plan

Spanish outlets close to Barcelona paint a picture of a club accelerating. Mundo Deportivo report that Barça met Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, at a Barcelona hotel on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by agency colleague Andy Bara. Their belief is simple: a strong relationship with Atlético can help unlock a deal that would reshape Flick’s attack.

Sport go even further on the detail. The Catalan paper say sporting director Deco sat down with Hidalgo for “more than four hours” to map out a possible transfer. From that meeting came a clear intention: Barcelona will present an opening offer of around €90 million plus bonuses.

It is an aggressive starting point, but still some distance from Atlético’s stance. Sky Sports report that the Madrid club want €150m for Álvarez – roughly £130m – a figure that underlines both his importance and the size of the bidding war they expect.

No one around the talks is pretending this will be straightforward. Sport stress that this will not be a “quick or easy negotiation” and certainly not comparable to the recent Anthony Gordon transfer, which moved at a different speed and scale. Atlético know they hold a prime asset. Barcelona, Arsenal and PSG all know it too.

A three-way fight for a serial winner

What makes Álvarez worth this scramble is obvious. At 26, he already owns a medal collection that most strikers would envy at retirement.

With Manchester City, he lifted the Premier League twice, the FA Cup once and the Champions League once, playing his part in Pep Guardiola’s dominant era. On the international stage, he has been central to Argentina’s golden run: the 2022 World Cup and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 have cemented his status as one of the elite forwards of his generation.

That profile is precisely why PSG are determined not to be passengers in this race. The French champions, coached by Luis Enrique, are in the market for a headline striker and see Álvarez as a ready-made focal point for their next iteration. Sources in Spain insist PSG are preparing a “strong push” of their own.

So the lines are drawn. Barcelona with their renewed sporting project and the pull of Camp Nou. Arsenal with a title-winning team and a manager who has shown he can elevate elite talent. PSG with the financial muscle and Parisian stage that continues to attract the game’s biggest names.

Who blinks first?

Right now, the numbers do not match. Barcelona’s planned €90m plus add-ons sits well below Atlético’s €150m valuation. Arsenal and PSG have encouragement from the player’s side but must decide how far they are willing to go in a market that has already been dragged towards the top end.

What is not in doubt is Álvarez’s position. He has informed Atlético of his desire to leave and turned down a new deal. The next move belongs to the clubs.

Barcelona are about to put their cards on the table. The question is whether Arsenal and PSG are ready to slam theirs down harder – or risk watching one of the world’s most complete strikers slip away to a rival.
